If Big Sur, Padang, Mentawai, southwest Mexico, Baja, Southern California, Hawaii, or Fiji is on your list — five things moved.
1. Big Sur: Highway 1 is still closed — don't come for the coast road
Cancel or reroute any Big Sur / Hwy 1 coast plan. Ready Monterey still has a hard closure from MM56 to MM2.1. TAMC's week-of report (Aug 30–Sep 5) is a full closure from Gorda (PM 10.2) to Captain Cooper Elementary (PM 50.1). State parks along that stretch — Point Sur, Andrew Molera, Pfeiffer Big Sur, Julia Pfeiffer Burns — are closed. No reopen ETA.
Timber is still a big fire (~24,800 acres, 21% contained); Plaskett is barely contained. No through-traffic. Use US 101. This is not a scenic detour — it's a don't-come call for the coast road trip.
2. Mentawai Fast — still confirm before you lock Padang
The public fast boat most independents use between Padang and the Mentawais went into a 1–2 week inspection halt after Fast 01 grounded Aug 14. Everyone got off safely. That window ended around Aug 28–29 — and we still couldn't verify today's sailings.
The operator site still shows booking and schedules with no outage or resume banner. No solid primary that service has fully resumed. If your trip depends on that ferry, call Mentawai Fast or your camp before you lock the Padang overnight. Overnight ASDP (Ambu-Ambu / Gambolo from Bungus, ~15h) or a camp boat if you must move. Not a stay-home-from-Indo call. It's a don't-assume-the-ferry call, in peak season.
3. Karina: life-threatening surf and rips — SW Mexico, Baja, SoCal early this week
If you're on southwest Mexico, Baja, or Southern California coasts early this week, treat exposed sessions and rock jetties as hazardous. NHC's Hurricane Karina advisory (Mon morning): Cat 4, well offshore, no coastal watches — but a surf hazard for SW Mexico and Baja the next couple days, spreading north to Southern California Monday through midweek: life-threatening surf and rip currents.
This is a change-your-safety call (or skip exposed paddles), not a "cancel Mexico" story and not a generic swell note. Verify before you paddle.
4. Lowell: life-threatening surf and rips — Hawaii mid-week
If you're in Hawaii mid-week into Labor Day week, recheck exposed ocean plans. CPHC on Tropical Storm Lowell (Mon morning): center well southeast of Hilo, track expected south of the islands, no coastal tropical watches yet — but swells likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip currents beginning around mid-week.
This is a safety/session call, not an automatic cancel. Labor Day weekend forecast is still uncertain — the surf hazard is the piece to act on now.
5. Fiji Pro week — Cloudbreak / Restaurants access pressure
WSL's Fiji Pro is live at Cloudbreak through Sep 4 (next call Sep 2, 7:00 AM FJT). Tourism Fiji has already flagged temporary closures and access restrictions around Cloudbreak and Restaurants during the contest.
If you're an independent in the Tavarua / Cloudbreak corridor through Sep 4, plan around contest boat traffic — shift boat or lodging timing, or expect congestion. Don't treat it as an open free-for-all.
